CIO Survey Shows IT Executives Focused on Reducing Costs, Managing Risk and Increasing Efficiency

Survey Conducted by Akibia Identifies Key Concerns for CIOs In 2009

June 01, 2009

Westborough, MA – June 1, 2009 – Akibia, a leading provider of consulting, integration and support for data center, network and security solutions, announced today the results of a survey of more than 60 Fortune 1000 CIOs and Vice Presidents of IT. The survey was conducted in one-on-one meetings with the executives between December 2008 and February 2009. Survey questions focused on budget realities, how those realities were impacting spending and the IT leaders' focus and pain points in the near term.

Results from the survey show that in light of recent budget cutbacks CIOs have become laser-focused on reducing costs, increasing efficiency and managing risk. While there is limited budget available for new initiatives and projects, those that will be green-lighted in 2009 will be critical projects that can immediately achieve these core goals.

Some highlights from the study include:

  • 94% of respondents report their IT budgets are down by 25% or more;
  • Almost half report that vendor management and consolidation is a major issue;
  • 90% of respondents state that compliance and IT governance are ongoing projects;
  • 77% of respondents see value in "practical use" IT training
  • 86% of respondents say they are planning to or are already implementing virtualization to some degree

The full results of the survey can be found in the whitepaper "CIO: State of the State" authored by Robert Klotz, vice president of Technology at Akibia. The whitepaper is available at www.akibia.com.

"In interviewing these CIOs it seemed clear that the executives had set strict priorities for 2009 and beyond: to reduce costs, increase efficiency and manage risk," said Klotz. "With 88% of current budgets operationally-focused, the CIOs were searching for ways to dramatically re-balance the budget via vendor rationalization and consolidation. The limited budget available for new investments needs to be prioritized among solutions that manage compliance more efficiently and help reduce costs of the IT infrastructure."
